composer's note

Far from home (2021) is a monumental work for four brass players and orchestra—an enormous undertaking for the soloists. Out of sympathy for their effort, I wanted to give the quartet another opportunity to shine in a different setting.

Closer to home is not a miniature but a transplantation of the same sentiments—longing and reflections on what “home” means—found in Far from home. What’s new here is the context: instead of standing before an orchestra, the quartet is immersed in an audio landscape of field recordings.
